AmazonBasics are More Affordable AA Rechargeable Batteries over Sanyo Eneloop

I'm a big fan of Rechargeable AA batteries but under a few conditions. They have to 'stay charged' even when sitting around a few weeks or even a few months. They also have to perform longer than your average battery, so less swapping through the day. This is why I built up an inventory of Sanyo Eneloop rechargeable batteries and have been using them in heavy rotation. The problem of course is these things aren't cheap.

Aside from all the camera accessories such as LED lights, portable audio recorders, and wireless mic packs, they have found their way into my home inside wireless mice, wireless keyboards, television remote controls, XBOX and Wii controllers. There just doesn't seem to be enough to go around these days, and looking to buy more I turned to AmazonBasics Rechargeable AA Batteries. With almost exact performance as the Sanyo Eneloops but at maybe 33% or so cheaper.

I'm still using my Sanyo chargers to recharge these batteries, so if you're already invested in Sanyo Eneloops these will fit seamlessly into your workflow. I've been very happy so far, but don't take my word. There are tons of reviews and customers performing extensive tests against the Eneloops. It would be my suggestion that you look into these batteries before pricing steadily climbs (find them here).

  1. And also, it does appear like the Amazon Basics are actually Eneloop third generation batteries (the product number for both is HR-3UTG, whereas the Costco Eneloops and most Eneloops on the market right now are the fourth generation, with the product number being BK-3MCCE).

    Just a note that Costco has Eneloop's relatively cheap. They had an 8-pack of AA and 4 pack of AAA plus a charger for $17 right now. The new version of Eneloop's are 12-pack of AA's plus a 4 pack of AAA's plus a newer charger for $23.

    Great idea as usual,
    I did search within the Amazon site for the 9V version of these to no avail.
    Are there any 9V variety for the long lasting rechargeable like eneloop ?

    Some of the reviewers said that the black ones were not branded Eneloops like the white ones. They were just some Chinese brand. I guess take that for what it's worth.

    @krys - Yes they have higher capacity ones, but the price doesn't balance out. All it means is that you can run a bit longer with the higher capacity ones, but for the price I think i'd rather go with a bunch of the white ones. For something like your Zoom H6, Zoom H1, Sennheiser G3 wireless kits, Microphones, etc they can probably run several days of shooting.

    Any suggestions on chargers? I'm starting to use these rechargeables more & more and have been using an old cheapo charger that takes forever.

    @Rob S. - There are certainly fancy patents out there on how these things can sit around for years and hold a charge. Amazon is not at all a 'tech company' that can come up with this, so you're most likely correct about being rebranded Sanyo tech. Good for us!

    Thanks, nice tip. Many of my Powerex rechargeable are not holding up so I don't think I'll buy those again. Reviewers online say these are rebranded second gen Eneloops which sounds great to me.
