HDMI LCD Monitor

I've had a few inquiries about possible new LCD View Finders a.k.a Loupes for the new Canon 5D Mark III. I'm still not able to release much information, or full images, but here's some teaser images of one. I received this prototype LCD Viewfinder recently which aligns perfectly to pretty much most of my cameras as well as the new 5DM3.

One thing to mention is that the LCD Screen on the back of the 5D Mark III is just a bit wider than this new ViewFinder (soon to be released) but there's barely a crop. The special bracket designed on this new LCD Viewfinder moves forward / back / left / right / up / down, which allows it to align to a variety of different camera bodies such as the new T4i, 7D, 60D, 5D Mark II & Mark III, Nikon, and more.

To show the flexibility, here i'm have it mounted with the new Sony RX100 camera (not directly). First I have the Sony RX100 mounted to a P&C Custom 717 Quick Release adapter so I can pull the camera off the entire rig quickly. The 717 Custom Plate also gives additional 1/4-20 threaded mounts (seen on right side) if I wanted to add a friction arm with LED light, Audio Recorder, Microphone, etc.

This new prototype viewfinder is mounted underneath the Custom 717 plate. Finally I have the P&C Pistol Grip mounted under the entire setup for easy handling and there's still a 1/4-20 threaded insert under the handle for an additional Friction arm. With the LCD ViewFinder attached, this gives me an additional point of contact for stabilization, and allows me to shoot in broad daylight.

Could this be the Meanest RX100 Rig so far, or the Silliest? Yeah i'll go with the Silliest...

Some notes about this new Viewfinder not seen in the images. It folds up, so if you don't need the ViewFinder you can open it up into a sun shade. It's also designed with a quick release baseplate system. The entire ViewFinder can detach from this little rig by unlocking the knob on the left side (under the 717 QR knob). It has a Glass optical element, and built in Diopter. There's a few more snazzy features but I think I said too much... More to come later about the new ViewFinder so Follow me on Twitter.

Ray T writes in and shares this updated version of the Canon 5D Mark II anti-twist plate [Thanks Ray]. This time, the new plate supports pin location for both the Canon 5D Mark II and even Canon's latest 5D Mark III. Anti-twist plates are important for those who don't want their cameras to shift when using items such as a Follow Focus system. The little pins fit into the alignment hole under the camera body. The plate then offers multiple threaded holes to secure your QR plates with two bolts (instead of one).

This Anti-Twist Plate now works as an HDMI cable protector with a 6 cable pinch that attaches to the side of the baseplate. If you haven't dealt with HDMI cables much, they consistently come loose of get yanked out of the camera body. At times, this cable can even cause some damage to the camera's internal HDMI port (an expensive fix). HDMI locks prevent cable shifting once it's connected to the cameras HDMI input. A cable lock like this will also save you from having to buy new HDMI cables from the constant damage.

From what I can tell, if you don't use the alignment pins, this baseplate might mount to other cameras as an HDMI lock. It also brags about how it can connect up to 6 cables at a time unlike other cable lock solutions. 6 simultaneous cable locks appears to be overkill because I doubt you'll be connecting your USB/AV port at the same time you connect your HDMI port, and also have a PC sync cord for flash photography. At most I think three locks would have been suffice - a shutter cable (5D3 starts video now), Microphone cable, and HDMI.

It is what it is, and though it will run you just under $50 bucks, it's priced cheaper than some other HDMI lock solutions and still doubles as a solid anti-twist plate. Check out the updated HDMI protector / Anti-Twist Plate over at CoolLCD (Click Here).

1280x800 LCD HDMI Monitor Kit DSLR
find-price-button 5D II 5.6" HDMI LCD Video Monitor 1280x800 HD Resolution

The very few cheap HDMI LCD monitors on the market at a size of 5.6" inches will have only 480 lines of resolution. At 1280x800, this New 5.6" HDMI LCD Monitor for DSLR video use would be considered true HD resolution.

the same resolution as the 13" Macbook Pro, but in a 5.6" display. This means that you'll see nearly a 300% improvement in detail with the H005 over competing field monitors"

For just about $230 dollars, this little monitor is quite impressive. If HD resolution claims are true, that price is a third what you could find elsewhere.

Of course it doesn't state fancy features like False Color on high end brands, but this monitor has Focus Peaking assist, powered by standard Sony batteries (or optional Canon LP-E6 battery plate), comes with a deep leather Sunshade, Ball Head Shoe Mount, Sony Battery Plate, XLR power adapter, HDMI cable, and BNC adapter. I'll be honest i've been out of the loop with what's going on with the Swivi LCD, but it did get a fairly decent review from EOSHD.com. It basically adds a large 5.6" LCD to cameras that lack a Vari-Angle LCD, and provides Focus Peaking, and HDMI pass through. Below is the demo video about the Swivi product features.

Just got news that the Swivi 5.6" HDMI LCD is having a 24 hour sale (also includes LP-E6 type battery and charger). Most retailers are offering product from $370-470 dollars, but for the next 24 hour sale it's been listed at $275 via Amazon (Click Here).

Jack shares a find in the comments about this GeChic 13" Portable LCD that can be used as a secondary screen for your laptop. [Thanks Jack]. Ok, so this is mainly a DSLR Video blog - there's more to this product.

The 13" screen has a resolution of 1366 x 768 (about HD resolution), but the real kicker is that it can be powered via simple USB 5V and has the option for HDMI input that can be used with Video cameras (your DSLR camera). This solves several problems for those who want to tote around a decently sized monitor around with HD resolution for remote monitoring. While the video above gives a different price, it's currently $168. Check it out on NewEgg.com (here).

There was an interesting article posted on this blog a few weeks ago about using a Motorola Lapdock as a DIY external HDMI display for your DSLR camera. There's a bunch of comments about how to go about doing this here: http://cheesycam.com/lapdock-as-hdmi-monitor/

Currently these Lapdocks are running for about $80 dollars on Amazon (seen here), but if you were curious and wanted to grab one at a better price, today 1saleaday has listed them for $59.99 via eBay (Click Here).

Here's something pretty interesting that reader Nathan Smith shares for an external HDMI Monitor. The Motorola Lapdock is used to connect to Android phones via HDMI and provides a keyboard, larger screen, two USB ports, and more. The Lapdock also has an internal battery that claims an 8 hour life span. Well the Lapdock never really took off as a product, and now you can find them on clearance or at discounted prices. Nathan was lucky enough to grab one for around $59 dollars. So what does this have to do with DSLR Video and cameras?

There were a few forums that claimed the Lapdock will perform as a normal HDMI screen with the right adapters and some videos have shown it being used with a Playstation. If you're wondering, the Lapdock has a Micro Male HDMI connection, so you'll need a female Micro HDMI to start with. Here Nathan proves that with the right cables, you can even use it to display the HDMI signal from your camera. Can't beat that for $59 bucks.

I also found this interesting because the Lapdock provides two USB ports. The Lapdock with it's internal rechargeable battery can be a remote monitor receiving the HD video feed and power the Asus through dual USB power without extra batteries (theory). I've updated the comments in this article with some information about the adapter and cable you'll probably need. Anyways, it's a neat idea and could be a fun thing to have with the clearance prices, but the only thing i'm still unsure of is the exact model that Nathan is using. [Update] He's using the Atrix 4G Lapdock and you can find the Lapdocks online via Amazon (click here)

Some Directors may want to look over your shoulder to see what you're shooting, so by streaming a video feed over, they can stand aside while you shoot. This is a test of an 8" monitor that has built in wireless, powered by a Canon LP-E6 battery, and a remote is mounted to the camera. It also has an HDMI input for non-wireless. That's all I can say for now.

Ok, someone nailed it. It's an 8" HDMI LCD monitor, but has built in wireless and comes with an SD Video transmitter. Normally around $500 bucks, there could be a few dozen available (soon) for around $200-250 which is why I was testing it out to see if it could be useful in some ways. It doesn't appear pixelated even when using the 5D Mark III SD out port. I could see this being used to send video out to someone who needs to see it. What do you guys think, at a lower price is this something useful? Find more information about it below (click here).
